What story is waiting underneath the one you see?
This November, we’ll explore the surprising art of blackout poetry—finding hidden poems within existing text and discovering what emerges when you choose what remains.
As the year begins to wind down, we’ll play with fragments, repetition, erasure, imagery, and unexpected connections. You may work with found text, or even create your own page of writing to transform. Then we’ll bring your words and discoveries into your art journal through mixed media.
No writing or art experience is required. Just bring your curiosity—and see what remains.

Join us for our next gathering on Thursday 11/05/26 at 6:30-9:00 for our monthly art journal gathering where writing, painting, collage, and mixed media come together as a creative practice of exploration and self-discovery. We will gather on the first Thursday of every month at the Wicked Wolf upstairs den in Long Beach.
In our third gathering, All That Remains, we’ll explore the we’ll explore the unexpected and creative world of blackout poetry, discovering hidden words, phrases, and poems within existing text.
You’ll transform a page of text into your own blackout poem, then incorporate it into your art journal through imagery, symbols, color, and mixed media. You may work with found text, or create your own writing to transform. We’ll play with what to keep, what to cross out, and what emerges in the space between the two. No writing or art experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to see what you can uncover.
All mixed media supplies are provided, but you will need to bring your own journal as those will not be provided. You are also welcome to bring any personal materials you'd like to incorporate into your journal, such as copies of photographs, favorite pens, meaningful papers, collage materials, or any creative supplies that inspire you.

What is Mixed Media Art Journaling?
Mixed media art journaling (or junk journaling) is a creative practice that uses both writing and art-making as a way to explore your inner world. Through paint, collage, words, images, and symbols, the journal becomes a place to follow your curiosity and see what emerges. Each layer adds to the conversation—sometimes revealing connections, ideas, or insights that you may not have discovered through words alone. The process is less about creating a finished artwork and more about allowing the page to become a space for curiosity, expression, and discovery.
What to Bring
BYOJ — Bring Your Own Journal!
I recommend bringing 2 separate journals:
A sketchbook for creating your visual journal pages
An additional journal or notebook for writing and reflection.
Why bring a separate writing journal?
1-We’ll be writing while the first layer of paint in our art journals is drying, so you’ll need either a second journal or additional paper for writing.
2-Your words are an important part of this process. You may want to return to your thoughts, reflections, and discoveries later, and having a separate writing journal allows you to revisit those words anytime. The pages in your visual journal may eventually become layered with paint, collage, and imagery, so keeping your writing separate gives those insights a place to be preserved.
You are also welcome to bring:
Photos or images you don't mind collaging
Favorite pens, markers, or art supplies
Meaningful papers or personal collage materials
I’ll provide the mixed media supplies we’ll be using during the workshop.

PREVIOUS WORKSHOPS
Step into the mysterious world of spirit houses in this October art journaling gathering. Through guided writing prompts, intuitive image-making, and mixed media exploration, you’ll create a miniature spirit house and incorporate it into your art journal if desired.
Your house can be playful, mysterious, magical, reflective, or inspired by a person, memory, or story. We’ll explore a limited color palette along the way, then spend most of our time creating, adding imagery, symbols, words, and details that make your little house uniquely yours.
No art experience is required. Bring your curiosity and imagination, and let the house take shape as you work.
In our first art journal gathering, Conversations with Future Me, we will explore the relationship between who we are today and the person we are becoming through guided writing prompts, intuitive image-making and mixed media exploration.
